Kim Darwin

Kim has enjoyed a rich and varied musical career as a virtuoso accordionist, freelance pianist, teacher and composer. He has taught hundreds of students, played piano in show bands backing up Hollywood acts, Big Bands, musical theatre productions and numerous Jazz ensembles. An adept vocal accompanist, Kim worked for years in the CBC’s variety department in Vancouver.

Kim Darwin

Today Kim maintains a passion for modern and avant-garde Jazz, and continues to explore and push the boundaries of Jazz improvisation. He currently records and performs with the Saul Berson Jazz Quartet, an unusual combination of sax, accordion, guitar and acoustic bass. The quartet has just produced a third album titled, Intricacy. In 2004, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Kim released Accordion Nights, a solo album of his original music.

At present, Kim is exploring outlets for his particularly zany brand of humour, performing in theatre pieces and exploring comic writing. A whole new arena for Darwin’s unique abilities opened up when he made his singing and acting debut with Mayne Island’s MILT theatre playing the role of Linus in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. He performed opposite talented fellow Jaiya member Lael Whitehead, who played the role of Lucy. Kim’s next role was wacky theatre critic Birdboot in the Tom Stoppard play, The Real Inspector Hound.

More recently Kim has been busy in the recording studio with Jaiya, where they have just completed their third album, Invocation: Songs for a Sacred Earth. He is currently rehearsing the role of Harvey in Shel Silverstein’s play One Tennis Shoe, and working on his brand new musical comedy show, Kim Darwin’s: Evolutionize this!
